The #2 Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball Team (12-2/6-0) had their backs against the wall for the entire game against #7 Westfield Shamrocks. Down 6-1 early and 8-5 late, the Tigers once again continued to battle, finally tying the game on Mayo Fernandez’s 2-out, 2-strike RBI single in the 7th before Deagan Repp’s walkoff RBI single a few batters later. Tigers 9, Shamrocks 8, and a dogpile ensued on Repp in shallow right field. The two teams traded 1 run each in the 1st. Trevor Hall tied the game at 1 with an RBI single to score Huston Dunn, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The wheels quickly fell off in the 2nd for the Tigers. The Tigers made 4 defensive errors, around 3 hits, 2 hit batters, and a walk. When the Tigers defense finally got off the field, they were down 6-1 coming to bat for just the 2nd time in the game. The Tigers started to chip away in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring 4 runs to cut the deficit to 6-5. With 1 out, Dunn was hit by a pitch and Zander Carnahan and Luke Cherry both had singles to load the bases. Hall plated Dunn with an RBI groundout. Jase Ruggles delivered a 2-run single to score Carnahan and Cherry, and Fernandez lined an RBI single to left to score Ruggles. The Shamrocks immediately responded with 2 more runs in the top of the 4th to extend their lead to 8-5. The Tigers continued to show their fight with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead back to 1 at 8-7. Ruggles was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Fernandez followed with a double into the right field corner to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. One out later, Brady Carman delivered a 2-run single into right field. Owen Lukac pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning with 2 strikeouts against the heart of the Shamrock batting order to set the stage for the exciting bottom half of the inning. Luke Cherry was hit on the first pitch of the inning. After 2 popups and down to their final out, the Tigers once again found themselves with their backs against the wall. Fernandez fouled off the first 2 pitches to go down 0-2 in the count. Pinch runner Collin Bumps stole 2nd on the next pitch, a ball, to put himself in scoring position. Fernandez laced the next pitch down the left field line to score Bumps and finally tie the game at 8. Carter Strole hit the very next pitch off the glove of a diving 3rd baseman for an infield single. Brady Carman hit the very next pitch up the middle off the glove of a diving 2nd baseman for another infield single to load the bases. Deagan Repp became the final hero hitting a 1-1 curveball into right centerfield to score Fernandez and begin the dogpile celebration. Lukac (2-0) earned the win with 1 inning of relief. Reid Garber also pitched brilliantly in relief, coming in to work out of a jam in the 5th and then pitching a scoreless 6th. Hayden Werner earned a no decision in his start, allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits in 1.2 innings. Quinn Distler helped right the ship, coming in relief with 2 outs in the 2nd and the bases loaded. Distler pitched a total of 2.1 innings, allowed 1 earned run on 1 hit. Grant Gearhart pitched 0.1 innings of relief. Fernandez and Carman both led the Tigers offense with 3 hits and 2 RBI. One of Fernandez’s 3 hits was a double. Repp contributed 2 hits and the walkoff RBI. Hall and Ruggles both had a hit and 2 RBI. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, April 30th, when they travel to Southeastern Royals for the 1st game of the HCC series and the annual Mudsock Trophy game.
