The #3 Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball Team (8-1/3-0) threw a combined no hitter to defeat #10 Noblesville Millers 4-2 in the 1st game of the HCC series. Owen Sanders (3-0) was outstanding and near perfect before running out of gas in the 7th inning. Sanders was perfect through the first 12 batters and took the no hit shutout into the 7th having faced only 2 batters over the minimum through 6 innings (one batter reached on an error in the 5th and another on a walk in the 6th). In his longest outing of the year, Sanders walked the first 2 batters of the 7th before handing the ball off to reliever Jase Ruggles. Ruggles struggled to command the zone walking 3 more batters that plated 2 Miller runs. With a 4-2 lead and the tying and go ahead runs on base, Ruggles was able to get a bases loaded strikeout and a game ending line drive double play by Mayo Fernandez. Sanders and Ruggles combined for the 4th no hitter in school history. Sanders now has 2 no hitters in his career having thrown a complete game no hitter as a sophomore in 2023 at Huntington North. Tonight, Sanders threw 6+ innings allowed 2 earned runs on 3 walks while striking out 7. Ruggles earned his 3rd save of the season. Ruggles also delivered big on offense with a 2-strike RBI double to left center to score Trevor Hall in the 2nd inning. The Tigers added 3 more runs in the 5th. Carter Strole reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to 2nd on a great dirt ball read when the pitch slightly kicked away from the catcher. Brady Carman sacrificed Strole to 3rd and was safe at first as the throw pulled the fielder off the base. Strole continued his heads up base running and raced home for the 2nd run of the game. Later in the inning with 2 outs, courtesy runner Owen Lukac at 2nd, and 1st base open, the Millers elected to intentionally walk Zander Carnahan. A few pitches later, Lukac stole 3rd and Carnahan stole 2nd with Luke Cherry at the plate. Cherry battled through the at bat fouling off pitches before delivering a 2-strike, 2-run single up the middle on the 8th pitch he saw giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead. The Tigers finished with 4 hits: Ruggles’ RBI double, Cherry’s 2-run single, and singles by Deagan Repp and Huston Dunn. The Tigers travel to Noblesville on Friday to complete the HCC Series. First pitch has been moved up to 6:30pm.
