The Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball Team (5-7/2-2) battled through the entire game going pitch for pitch against #1 Center Grove Trojans (11-1) but could not push across any runs and fell 2-0 to the Trojans. The Trojans pitcher had a perfect game through 1 out in the 5th, but Justin Brown broke up the perfect game with an infield single that kicked away from a diving third baseman. Owen Lukac followed with a 2-strike double to the left centerfield fence, but Brown was thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay throw by the Trojans. Andrew Baldini reached on an infield single in the top of the 6th inning, but he was erased when Vincent Pecoraro lined into a double play while Baldini was attempting to steal on the pitch. David Pina hit a ground rule double to right centerfield with 2 outs in the 7th inning, but the game ended with the next batter. Starting pitcher Luke Benefiel (0-2) pitched great against a very talented Trojan lineup. Benefiel allowed a leadoff double in the 2nd. The next Trojan batter reached on an infield single up the middle to put runners at 1st and 3rd with no outs. After a sacrifice fly scored the Trojans first run, Benefiel retired the next 2 batters to limit the damage. Benefiel did not allow a runner to reach 2nd base again until the 5th inning. After a strikeout to start the inning, Benefiel would have worked out of the 5th inning without a run, but a popup was lost in a bright sun that landed for a hit. Another single allowed a baserunner to score, but Benefiel struck out a batter for out #2 with runners on 2nd and 3rd. After an intentional walk to load the bases with 2 outs, Benefiel finished the inning with another strikeout to once again minimize the damage. Overall, Benefiel pitched 5 innings allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 5. Grant Wolf worked a scoreless 6th inning and finished with 1 strikeout. Wolf also worked out of a bases loaded jam when the Trojans earned 2 walks and reached on a Tigers defensive error. The Tigers return to HCC play on Thursday when they host Westfield Shamrocks at 6pm.
