The #6 Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball Team (4-5/1-1) split a doubleheader at Mt. Vernon Marauders on Saturday afternoon, winning 8-2 in Game 1 before losing Game 2 10-9 in extra innings. In Game 1, the Tigers used 13 walks, 1 hit batter, and 3 hits to jump out to an 8-0 lead. The Tigers pitchers did the rest by holding the Marauders scoreless until 2 unearned runs in the last inning. Austin Conley (1-0) started on the mound and only allowed 2 baserunners on a hit and a walk in 3 scoreless innings of work. Conley recorded 4 strikeouts. Grant Wolf also only allowed 1 hit in his 3 scoreless innings of relief. Wolf recorded 3 strikeouts but did allow 4 walks and hit 1 batter. Jackson Spicer pitched the 7th inning, struck out 1, and allowed 2 unearned runs on an error and 2 hits. Offensively, Carter Strole delivered the loudest hit of the game, a 2-run double into right centerfield in the 3rd inning to break a 0-0 tie. Connor Hackworth added a single and 2 RBI. Ethan Buelt also added a hit, and David Pina collected an RBI. The Tigers used aggressive baserunning throughout the game stealing 10 bases led by Strole’s 3 stolen bags. In Game 2, the Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Justin Brown hit the first pitch he saw for a 2-run homerun over the left centerfield fence. The Marauders quickly responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st to tie the game and extended their lead to 6-2 through 4 innings. The Tigers scored 2 more runs in the 5th on Strole’s RBI groundout and Brown’s RBI sacrifice fly. The Marauders once again scored in bottom half of the inning to extend lead to 7-4. Owen Lukac added an RBI double to deep centerfield to cut the lead to 7-5 in the top half of the 6th, but the Marauders scored 2 more in the bottom of the 6th to take a 9-5 lead into the 7th inning. Like they did Friday night, the Tigers continued to show grit and fought to the very end. This time the Tigers scored 4 runs in the top of the 7th to tie the game at 9. The Tigers utilized a couple of defensive errors, a big 2-run, 2-strike double from Sean Frey and RBI groundouts by Andrew Baldini and Vincent Pecoraro. Eli Poisel came in relief in the 7th and threw a scoreless inning to send the game to extra innings. After the Tigers failed to score in the top of the 8th, the Marauders delivered a 1-out RBI single to walkoff the Tigers in the bottom of the 8th. Brown led the Tigers offense with a 2-4 day that included a homerun, a double, a sacrifice fly, and 3 RBI. Lukac also finished 2-4 with an RBI double, a walk, 2 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored. Ethan Buelt contributed 2 hits in the game. The Tigers used 4 pitchers in the game with Luke Benefiel getting the start followed by Miles Tebben, Baldini, and Poisel. Poisel (0-1) picked up the loss in relief. The Tigers return to HCC play on Thursday when they travel to Noblesville for a 7pm start.
