The Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball team (6-8/2-3) scored 2 runs in the 6th inning to take a 3-2 lead and eventually defeat the Westfield Shamrocks in Game 1 of the HCC Series.
Down 2-1 with 1 out in the bottom of 6th, JP Preston smacked a single down the left field line. Dom Oliverio followed with a 2-strike RBI triple to left centerfield to score Preston from 1st and tie the game. Grant Whetsel followed with a 2-strike groundball to the right of the 2nd basemen who was playing in on the grass. The ball took the fielder away from homeplate allowing Oliverio to score the go ahead run from 3rd and give Whetsel the game winning RBI.
Nick Lukac led off the game with a homerun to the left of centerfield. The homerun was Lukac’s 3rd of the season and 3rd in the last 5 games.
Daniel Owens (1-1) earned the win on the mound in relief of starter Jon Vore. Owens faced 4 batters in his 1.2 innings of work, struck out 1, and allowed 1 hit. Owens also picked off 2 base runners from 1st base, including the final out of the game. Vore earned a no decision, but pitched well. He threw 5.1 innings, struck out 6, allowed 6 hits, and 1 earned run, while walking 0.
Game 2 of the Westfield Series is scheduled for Thursday night at 6pm at Westfield. Forecast is calling for heavy rain. If Thursday’s game is rained out, then Game 2 would move to Friday night at Westfield.
