The Fishers Varsity Boys Basketball team opened up its home and HCC Conference season on Friday night with a win against the Noblesville Millers 59-51.
With a new Head Coach at the helm the new-look Noblesville Millers strode in to the Tiger Den with a lot of confidence and it showed early on as the visitors refused to allow the Tigers to get too far ahead in the opening minutes of the 1st quarter trailing just 15-10 heading into the 2nd period. In the 2nd, things didn’t get much easier for the home team as the Noblesville defensive strategy to counter high scoring Sophomore Jeffrey Simmons paid huge dividends as the Tigers struggled to get open looks for their leading scorer and they didn’t fair much better on the other end allowing the Millers to connect on 4 3-pointers in the period cutting Fishers lead to just 3 at 28-25 going into the intermission.
Fishers found it’s footing to open up the 2nd half but Noblesville once again converted on numerous open looks from the outside further cutting into the already slim Tigers lead with the game separated by just a basket at 41-39 going into the final quarter of play. In the 4th, Fishers amped up their defensive pressure and was finally able to open up the lead and get a little breathing room with 3 straights stops to open the period. In the end, the Tigers proved just a little too much to overcome as they closed out their 3rd consecutive win to open the season 59-51. Leading the way for Fishers was Sophomore big man Jeffrey Simmons with his first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Senior sharpshooter Alex Szilagyi added 17 points. Rounding out the Tigers attack was Isaac Farah with 8 points, Drew Turner with 7 points, and Bryce Williams chipped-in 5 points respectively.
The win moves Fishers to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in Hoosier Crossroads Conference play. The Tigers host neighboring Mount Vernon (Fortville) on Saturday, December 7 with tip-off of the JV game at 6:00 pm.
