The Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball team (10-12/5-5) completed the sweep of the Avon Orioles Friday night winning the first game 13-3 in 5 innings before winning the second game 4-1.
Game 1 began in Fishers on Wednesday before being suspended by rain. The Tigers led the Orioles 9-3 with 2 outs in the top of the 4th when the rain halted play. The game resumed Friday night at Avon. The Tigers scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to secure the 10-run mercy rule when Kaid Muth singled home Nick Lukac. Muth led the Tigers with 3 hits and 2 RBI. Grant Whetsel and Daniel Owens each contributed 2 RBI and a single. JP Preston added an RBI and a single. JJ Woolwine was on base 3 times and scored all 3 times. Lukac was on base 3 times as well and scored twice. Together, the Tigers stole 6 bases in the game.
Cory Wolter was almost perfect in 2 innings of relief. Wolter retired 6 of the 7 batters he faced including 2 strikeouts. Anthony Castellani (1-3) started the game and pitched 3 innings on Wednesday to earn his first win of the season. Castellani and Wolter combined to hold the Orioles to just 2 hits.
While the Tigers scored lots of runs in Game 1, the formula for Game 2 was outstanding pitching to go with timely hitting. Tristan Baker (3-1) earned the victory on the mound as he pitched his 2nd complete game in as many starts. Baker allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits while striking out 5.
The Tigers scored in the 3rd inning when JJ Woolwine scored on Kiel Brenczewski’s RBI groundout. With 2 outs and the Tigers leading 1-0 in the 5th, Nick Lukac and Brenczewski executed a double steal to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Daniel Owens followed with a 2-out, 2-run single to left field. Grant Whetsel would give the Tigers a 4-0 lead with an RBI hit by pitch in the 6th inning. The Orioles would score their only run in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Orioles threatened in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 runners on, but the game ended when Lukac made a great play on a slow roller.
The Tigers return to action on Monday when the host 2018 1A State Champion Daleville at 6pm.
