The Fishers Tigers JV Red team (1-0/0-0) won a back-and-forth game against the Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles to begin the 2019 season by a score of 6-5. Four Tiger pitchers combined to allow only 2 hits while striking out 13 Golden Eagles. In the decisive 5th inning, two doubles with 2 outs allowed the Tigers to secure the victory.
JP Preston and Jack Backofen were strong early on the mound for the Tigers as each pitched 2.0 innings and each allowed one run as a result of solid base running from the Golden Eagles and a couple ill-timed wild pitches and passed balls. Preston struck out 4 while Backofen struck out 3. Jacob Senior pitched the 5th inning where the Golden Eagles again took advantage of Tiger miscues as a stolen base followed by two errors led to Guerin taking a 5-2 lead in the middle of the 5th inning.
The Tigers were able to answer back as Ian Willoughby singled before Jeffrey Simmons walked on 2-out full count. Senior then doubled to score both runners and cut the lead to 1 run. After another full count walk by Grant Moritz, Zach Cox delivered a double of his own to give the Tigers the lead.
Senior came back out to pitch the 6th inning and went 1-2-3 to earn the win as Simmons pitched a perfect 7th inning including two strikeouts.
The Tigers travel to Carmel on Wednesday night before having a week off for Spring Break.
