The Fishers Varsity Boys Basketball team beat HCC Conference newcomer Franklin Central by a final score of 67-54 for their 2nd consecutive win moving them to 12-5 on the season and 4-1 in HCC Conference play.
In what proved to be a much tougher victory than many may have assumed based solely off of overall records the Tigers found themselves in a bit of a battle in Saturday evening’s matinee. Fishers started the game focused on immediately establishing their outstanding Freshman big man Jeffrey Simmons in the post riding his hot hand to an early 16-13 lead after the 1st quarter but the visiting Flashes wouldn’t let the Tigers stretch that lead very far matching the home team basket for basket the rest of the half with Fishers up just 35-32 heading into the break. Coming out of the break, the Tigers would once again look to their star big man to provide the offensive firepower while ratcheting up the defensive pressure en route to a 16-10 advantage in the period to extend their lead to 51-42 going into the final quarter of play. In the 4th, Franklin Central would once again mount a strong run of their own but mounting foul trouble would prove to be the difference as Fishers capitalized just enough from the line hitting 7 of their 12 FT’s in the quarter to help seal their 2nd straight win and put them in prime position for their second HCC Conference title all-time with just 2 Conference games to play. In what was arguably one of their most complete team victories of the season 8 total players scored at least 3 points with Jeffrey Simmons once again leading the way with 24 points and 12 rebounds followed by Senior guards Willie Jackson with 12 points and Josiah Matthews added in 11 points.
The Tigers leave the friendly confines of the Tiger Den when they travel to face their 4th straight HCC Conference opponent in the Westfield Shamrocks next Thursday, January 31 with tip-off at 7:30 pm.
