The Fishers Varsity Boys Basketball team beat Anderson in their opening round game of Sectional #8 last evening by a final score of 65-51 to advance to Friday night’s Quarterfinal game where they will face host and reigning Sectional champions Carmel in the nights matinee.
The Tigers looked and played like a team on a mission from the onset running out to an early 20-11 lead midway through the 1st quarter but it would be the final 10 minutes of the half where they made their most emphatic statement. At the center of the Fishers run to end the 1st half day was Junior guard Justin Long who provided a major, and much needed, spark off the bench in instantly creating havoc for the Indians backcourt on back-to-back deflections and subsequent steals igniting the Tigers transition offense which converted both turnovers into 5 quick points to further extend their lead to 10 going into the intermission up 27-17. In the 3rd quarter, Fishers had a clear emphasis on pushing their lead out to 15-20+ in the first 4 minutes of the period to essentially put the game on ice the rest of the way but as has been their MO for much of the season things did not go quite as they had planned coming out of the locker room and instead they would see Anderson connect on a few quick 3-point attempts cutting the Tiger lead to 4 points midway through the quarter. The Indians run would be short-lived though as Fishers once again clamped down on defense shifting their focus back to mounting as many stops as possible knowing the offense would soon follow if they did their work on ‘D’ and they would not be disappointed as Junior guard Alex Szilagy got loose for a momentum shifting 3-pointer followed by an easy deuce on the ensuing possession after the Tigers forced yet another tough, contested Anderson shot which was pulled down by Jeffrey Simmons whom promptly hit Szilagy in-stride on the other end as he got out ahead of all 5 players in white, capping the Fishers run and propelling them to a 40-28 advantage by the end of the 3rd. In the 4th quarter, the Indians came out gunning with a barrage of 3-point attempts connecting on 2 off them in the span of less than a minute into the period but their last gasp effort would prove futile as the Tigers had an answer every time allowing them to finally ice the game away en route to their 65-51 victory. Leading the way for Fishers was Alex Szilagy with 20 points and 3 steals with both Justin Long and Jeffrey Simmons chipping in 12 points apiece respectively.
The win moves the Tigers to 17-7 on the season as they begin to prepare for Friday night’s Quarterfinal matchup with the Hamilton County rival Carmel Greyhounds whom are seeking their 8th consecutive Sectional title and 10th in 11 years. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 8:00 pm so be sure to get your tickets now and get the popcorn ready as the Fishers would certainly appreciate all the help they can get from the fans in what is assured to be the most hostile atmosphere of the season thus far.
