The Fishers Varsity Boys Basketball team outlast Ben Davis 71-58 last Tuesday evening to win their season opener.
In the opening quarter, the Tigers went to their reliable standout Sophomore Jeffrey Simmons early and often as they used a strong interior presence to open up a 20-16 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The host Giants would fight back in the second frame forcing Fishers into numerous turnovers which helped them cut the lead to just 1 halfway through the period but the Tigers would once again push the lead to 4 going into the break with a 34-30 advantage.
Ben Davis would make another run to start the 2nd half using relentless defensive pressure to eventually take their first lead of the ballgame late in the 3rd quarter but Fishers had an answer once more getting a quick flurry of 3 pointers from Alex Szilagyi whom would add one more as time expired giving the Tigers a 51-48 lead and the momentum heading into the last quarter of play. In the 4th, it was Fishers who would up their defensive pressure and ultimately push the game out of control with a commanding 20-10 advantage in the period as they won going away 71-58. Fishers was led by Sophomore Jeffrey Simmons with 29 points and 8 rebounds and Senior Alex Szilagyi added in 22 and 4 rebounds. Rounding out the Tigers scoring were Seniors Geoffrey Brown with 7 points and Dominic Castellani chipped in 6 points respectively.
Fishers is in action again next Tuesday, December 2 when they travel to Muncie Central in the first game being played in the old Muncie Fieldhouse which was destroyed over 2 years ago. The JV game will tip-off at 6:00 pm followed by the Varsity directly after.
