The IHSBCA #2 Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball team (28-7 / 15-3) advanced to the Class 4A State Finals with a 5-3 victory over the Chesterton Trojans in the Plymouth Semi-State on Saturday.
Starter Luke Albright worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 1st. The Tigers immediately responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. JJ Woolwine worked a walk to lead off the inning. Craig Yoho was hit by the next pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Grant Richardson opened the scoring connecting on a 2-2 pitch for a 2-run double off the right centerfield fence. After a groundout, Matthew Wolff scored Richardson with his own RBI double to right. Alex Jamieson followed with a single to put runners at 1st and 2nd before Nick Lukac connected on a 2-strike RBI single to right centerfield.
The Tigers headed into the 2nd inning with a 4-0 lead, a lead they would not relinquish despite a great effort from the Trojans. Albright worked out of another bases loaded jam in the 2nd inning before working back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the 3rd and 4th. Jamieson would extend the Tigers lead in the 3rd with a 2-out homerun off the scoreboard in left. The homerun was Jamieson’s 6th of the season.
The Trojans would make every effort to attempt a comeback scoring 2 runs (only 1 earned) in the 5th inning off of Albright. Richardson relieved Albright to start the 6th inning, and the Trojans scored another unearned run to cut the Tigers lead to 5-3. The Tigers were victim of 5 defensive errors in the game leading to 2 unearned runs.
With the Tigers leading 5-3 in the 7th, Trojan runners at 1st and 2nd, and 1 out, Richardson induced a strikeout and a weak ground ball in front of the plate to clinch the Semi-State Championship and send the Tigers to Victory Field for a chance to play for the IHSAA Class 4A State Championship.
Albright (8-2) earned the win on the mound striking out 5 and allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits in 5 innings of work. Richardson earned his 1st save of the season striking out 3 and allowing 1 unearned run on 4 hits in the final 2 innings.
