The Tigers Unified Track and Field team captured its first ever Sectional title by edging out Warren Central and Lawrence North, 118-115-112. A total team effort was needed on Saturday in a talented and deep meet with the Tigers delivering in the clutch as the title was decided in the 4×100 girls and boys relays. This title adds to the strong season for the Tigers as they also were County Champions and HCC Co-Champions.
The Tigers were led by a dominating performance by Freshman Sam Syrus as he won both the 100m (12.05 PR) and 400m (55.78) sectional titles. Both the boys 4×100 relay team of AJ Valerio, Anthony Bishop, Nathan Oman and Josh Ibey and the girls 4×100 relay team of Kristyn Santiago, Lindsey Dale, Libby Maahs and Ariana Wills also captured sectional titles in season best times of 50.95 and 1:02.04 respectively.
Colin Schooley came from behind in an exciting 100m heat to win in a PR time of (18.9). Conner Babcock place 2nd in the top 400m heat with a PR time of 57.22. Josh Ibey (44-6) placed 2nd in the top shot put flight. Chloe White (22-0) placed 2nd in her shot put flight and Evan Barker also placed 2nd in his shot put flight with a PR throw of 34-9.
Matt Kiffmeyer (100m 16.83), Nick Taulman (400m 1:05.9), Kellen Bridgeforth (400m 1:16.51), Rebecca Lewis (long jump 13-3.5), AJ Valerio (long jump 12-10.5), Maggie Hay (long jump 12-6.5) and Colin Schooley (long jump 8-10.5) all had PR performances during the day while scoring very important points for the Tigers.
The Tigers will compete in the strong Kokomo Regionals on Saturday May 25th, with the meet starting at 11am. The top 5 teams from the 12-team field will advance to the state finals at IU Bloomington on June 1st.
