Game Recap

After beginning the season ranked #2 in the IHSBCA Poll, the Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball team (27-6/15-3) finished their season in the Elite 8, losing in the Regional Final to the Zionsville Eagles. As they have done all year, the Tigers would not go down without a fight, scoring 2 runs in the 7th and leaving the tying and go-ahead runs on base as the final out was recorded.

Luke Duermit (9-1) suffered his first loss on the mound and was victim of 3 recorded errors and a couple of mental errors that did not show up in the scorebook. Duermit limited the Eagles to 6 hits and only 2 earned runs out of the Eagles 4 total runs. Duermit finished with 5 strikeouts.

Despite the slow start, the Tigers outhit the Eagles 10 to 6. The Tigers found themselves down 4-0 in the top of the 5th. Matthew Wolff led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to 2nd on an error. Wolff advanced to 3rd on Taylor Soper’s groundout and scored on Jack Roudebush’s sacrifice fly to center.

With the score 4-1 in the top of the 7th, Wolff again led off the inning with a single. Soper followed with a single to center, but pinch runner JJ Woolwine was thrown out trying to advance to 3rd. Roudebush reignited the rally with a single to center. After a strikeout, Andy Bennett knocked in 2 runs to make the game 4-3 on a single to left that was just beyond the Eagle’s diving left fielder’s reach. Craig Yoho was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on 2nd and the go ahead run at 1st. However, the Tigers ran out of pitches as the game ended on a strikeout.

Wolff continued his hot hitting in the tournament going 3-3. Roudebush also was perfect on the night finishing 2-2 with an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Yoho added a double, and Bennett contributed his 2-run single.

The Tigers advanced to the Regional Final with a 2-0 win over Huntington North in the morning Regional Semi-Final. Starter Ryan Metz (7-0) extended his streak of not allowing an earned run in the tournament to 14 innings, as he threw a complete game shutout. Metz scattered 5 hits, while striking out 3. After leaving the bases loaded in the first, Metz proceeded to work 3 straight 1-2-3 innings and allowed only 1 base runner to reach 2nd base n the final 6 innings.

As they’ve done all year, the Tigers had a different leader at the plate in the morning game. Kiel Brenczewski led the Tigers with a 2-3 effort that included an RBI and a double. Caleb Brenczewski also added an RBI single

The Tigers conclude their historic season with a 27-6 record, the best record in the school’s 11-year history. The Tigers captured their first HCC Championship finishing 15-3 in conference play. The Tigers also won their first Sectional Championship when they defeated #1 Carmel in the Sectional Championship. Five of the 6 Tiger losses were by 1 run with 2 of those coming on walkoffs in extra innings and the other 3 ended with the tying run on base.
