The #3 Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball team (26-5/15-3) won the Sectional 8 Championship at Westfield on Memorial Day defeating host Westfield in the Semi-Final and knocking off #1 Carmel in the Championship.
The Championship Game was one for the ages! The Tigers and Greyhounds went extra innings again after having played 9 innings during the regular season that ended in a loss for the Tigers. This time the Tigers finished on top winning 4-3 in 8 innings.
Caleb Brenczewski led off the 8th inning with a 4-pitch walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brendan Toungate. Caleb Brenczewski then stole 3rd base on a strikeout pitch for out #2. Matthew Wolff delivered the game winning RBI when he beat out an infield hit that took the shortstop into the hole.
The 1-run lead would be all starting pitcher Luke Duermit (9-0) would need as he retired the side in the bottom of the 8th inning to seal the victory. After giving up back-to-back doubles in the 3rd inning that tied the score 3-3, Duermit retired the final 18 batters of the game, including 9 strikeouts in those 6 innings. Duermit finished with 10 strikeouts and allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits.
Wolff finished the championship game 2-4 with a double and the game winning RBI. Taylor Soper and Trevor Newman both delivered RBIs for the Tigers when they scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning. Caleb Brenczewski was on base 3 times (hit by pitch, single, and a walk) with the key stolen base in the 8th inning to put him in position to score the winning run.
In the afternoon Semi-Final Game, starting pitcher Ryan Metz (6-0) led the Tigers with a complete game performance in the 6-1 victory over the Shamrocks. Metz allowed 0 earned runs on 5 hits (all singles) while striking out 5. With Tigers leading 2-1, Andy Bennett delivered a big 2-run triple in the 4th inning to extend the lead. The Tigers added 2 more runs in the 7th to put the game out of reach.
Bennett finished 2-4 with the triple and 2 RBIs. Matthew Wolff was 2-3 and on base all 3 times. Taylor Soper and Brendan Toungate both contributed RBIs for the Tigers.
