Boys Lacrosse Wins 1st Round Tournament Game Against St. Joseph’s

The #9 Tigers were scheduled to play their first round IHSLA state tournament game against #8 St. Joseph’s High School in South Bend on Wednesday May 24. However, storms in the South Bend area resulted in the reschedule game to Thursday May 25. Thursday’s weather was beautiful at Leighton Stadium on St. Joseph’s campus for a game that ended with a combined 27 goals scored and a first round tournament victory for the Tigers.
Scoring started quickly in the first quarter when sophomore attackman Matthew Shores (6 goals) scored unassisted to give the Tigers an early lead with 11:08 remaining. The Indians of St. Joseph’s High School would respond as senior midfielder Keiran McKenna (5 goals) scored unassisted with 10:06 remaining. McKenna would score another unassisted goal to give the Indians the 2-1 lead with 6:14 remaining in the quarter. Matthew Shores scored his second goal of the day to tie the game up at 2 goals a piece. Shores’ goal started a 7 goal run for the Tigers that stretched into the second quarter. Senior midfielder Cam Gieselman (4 goals, 1 assist) scored unassisted to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Later in the quarter Gieselman assisted senior midfielder Justin Wilson (3 goals, 1 assist) for his first goal of the game. Matthew Shores finished the 1st quarter scoring with his third goal of the game with 0:08 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Tigers led heading into the second quarter 5-2.
The Tigers scored 3 additional goals in the second quarter quarter to give them an 8-2 at halftime. The Tiger held the Indians scoreless in the second quarter due to solid defensive effort from senior defensemen Parker Smith (5 ground balls, 5 CTO), Branden Stoeffler (3 ground balls, 1 CTO), Zach Celentano (1 assist, 4 ground balls, 1 CTO) and freshman LSM Colin Bilbrey (3 ground balls, 1 CTO). Junior goalie Isaiah Dunnuck (11 saves) tallied 4 saves in the first half.
The Indians gave great effort all the way to the final whistle in the second half scoring 8 goals. The TIgers would score 9 of their own to maintain the lead and give them a first round tournament victory 17-10. The Indians were penalized 11 times during the game and the Tigers capitalized scoring on 5 of 8 (62.5%) extra man opportunities. This was the best performance by the extra man unit all season. The Tigers also excelled with clears as they successfully cleared the ball 21 of 25 attempts for an 84% success rate.
The TIgers advance to the IHSLA quarterfinals on Saturday May 27 to play #1 Carmel (14-6) at Murray Stadium at Carmel High School. The game will begin at 3:30pm.
GAME NOTES: – The Tigers traveled in style in a charter bus that made the 2.5 hour trip to South Bend, IN a bit more comfortable. – The Tigers tallied their 4th straight first round tournament victory on Thursday. – The Tigers recorded their first road victory in the IHSLA tournament on Thursday. – The Tigers out shot the Indians 37-32.
