The #9 Tigers (12-6, 2-1) traveled to #3 Hamilton Southeastern (12-6, 2-1) the Friday May 19 for the annual Mudsock game. Each year HSE and Fishers agree to play this game as their last regular season game of the season. Entering this fifth Mudsock game the series was tied 2-2.
The Tigers started strong in the first quarter holding the Royals scoreless in the quarter. The Royals would commit a slashing penalty at the 4:09 mark in the first quarter. The Tigers would take advantage of the extra man opportunity as senior attack Joe O’Connell (1 goal, 2 assists) fed senior midfielder Max Shores (1 goal) who scored the games first goal at the 3:21 mark. Heading into the second quarter the Tigers were in the lead 1-0.
The Tigers would hold on to the lead in the second quarter until the 4:48 mark when the Royals would score their first goal of the game. The Royals goal started a 9 goal run that stretched into the third quarter until sophomore attackman Matthew Shores (1 goal, 1 assist) scored a goal at the 1:20 mark of the third quarter to end the Royals run. The Royals won a majority of the ground balls during this stretch and through 3 quarters held a 12-3 advantage with face offs.
The Tigers began a courageous comeback effort in the fourth quarter starting with a unassisted goal by senior midfielder Justin Wilson (1 goal) at the 11:27 mark in the quarter. Senior attackman Joel Smyth (4 goals) scored all four of his goals in the fourth quarter leading the Tigers in their comeback effort. Joe O’Connell would add a goal in the fourth quarter as well but the Tigers efforts would not be enough and the Royals would take the fifth Mudsock meeting. Tiger nation is proud of the team’s effort throughout this game.
The Tigers end a successful regular season with an overall record of 12-7 and a 2-2 HCLC record. The Tigers are seeded 9th in the Indiana High School Lacrosse Association (IHSLA) state tournament. The Tigers travel to St. Joseph’s High School in South Bend on Wednesday May 24 to compete in the first round of the IHSLA state tournament.
GAME NOTES: – Tigers cleared the ball with an 81% success rate. – The Tiger EMO unit went 1 for 6 durnig the game. – The Royals were penalized 9 times (including conduct and unsportsmanlike penalties) pcompared to the Tigers 2 penalties. – Senior close defensemen Zach Celentano (6 ground balls, 2 CTO’s) , Parker Smith (3 ground balls, 2 CTO’s), Branden Stoeffler (4 ground balls, 1 CTO) gave excellent effort during the game against great competition. – Freshmen Colin Bilbrey (3 ground balls, 1 CTO) was all over the field pressuring Royal ball carriers.
