#8 Fishers (10-5, 2-0) traveled to #5 Zionsville (7-4, 1-0) for a big Hoosier Crossroads Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) game on Wednesday May 10. Each team entered the game undefeated in conference play and the winner would control their own fate on the road to a HCLC championship.
The Eagles would score first at the 6:42 mark of the first quarter. The Tigers fought back and answered with a goal of their own when senior midfielder Max Shores (1 assist) found senior attackman Justin Wilson (1 goal) high on the crease for a step down shot. The Eagles would score another goal at the 1:59 mark of the first giving a 2-1 lead to the Eagles at the end of the quarter.
The Eagles would score again at the 7:21 mark of the second quarter quarter giving them a 3-1 lead. The Tigers showed grit and determination and fought their way back to tie the game 3-3 after unassisted goals by sophomore attackman Matthew Shores (1 goal) and senior attackman Joe O’Connell (2 goals) were scored within 16 seconds of each other. Zionsville scored 2 goals within the last minute of the second quarter to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead at halftime.
The Eagles defense only allowed the Tigers 6 shot attempts in the third quarter and only a single attempt on goal. Their efforts held the Tigers scoreless in the third quarter. The Eagles would score a goal at the 5:15 mark of the quarter and the Tigers would enter the fourth quarter down by 3 goals as the Eagles led 6-3.
The Tigers once again challenged the Eagles clawing back into the game as Joe O’Connell scored his second goal of the game at the 7:51 mark. Senior midfielder Cam Gieselman would score at the 1:42 mark which made the score 6-5 Eagles. The Eagles would win the next faceoff and a uncharacteristic communication error on defense would give the Eagles an easy goal at the 1:18 mark. The Eagles would score again to make the final score 8-5.
The loss hurts the TIgers chances of winning a conference championship but the Tigers are not eliminated from contention. Zionsville still has two games against Westfield and Noblesville. “Our team fought hard this evening and faced a talented Zionsville squad who play great defense. We were challenged by Zionsville and twice during the game we tied the score and came within a goal near the end of the fourth quarter. We had too many turnovers and that cost us much need possessions but we can improve and build off of the fight our team showed this evening.”, said Coach McInrue of his team’s performance.
The Tigers (10-6, 2-1) will travel to Bishop Chatard (5-9) this Saturday May 13 for their next game.
GAME NOTES: – Senior goalie Isaiah Dunnuck recorded 10 saves against Zionsville. – The Tigers had a 72% clearing success rate during the game. – The Tigers turnover problems continued as the team tallied 20 turnovers.
