The Fishers boys volleyball club program season got underway this past Saturday with all 3 teams playing in the Ides of March tourney hosted by Bishop Chatard High School. Varsity finished with a strong 3-1 record. The day started by beating Bishop Chatard 2-0 (25-16, 25-9), then Hebron 2-0 (25-18, 25-12), finally Brownsburg 2-0 (25-23, 25-18) to earn a spot in the championship match vs Southport. They lost a very close contest 1-2 (22-25, 25-22, 12-15).
For the tournament, senior Chase Christiansen led the offensive attack with 29 kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Followed by sophomore Mario Capo (19 kills/.333) and senior Phil Tran (8 kills/.500). All this offensive power wouldn’t be possible without the help of senior setter Kaleb Clark who posted a total of 66 assists with a 7.33 assist per set ratio. The defense was anchored by senior libero Lucas Hoffman, posting a total of 23 digs and 30 serves received. He was followed by Mario Capo (15/24) and senior Connor Krehbiel (13/14).
The JV1 team also finished strong with an overall 2-1 record, beating Brownsburg JV and Southport JV teams. Only dropping a match vs Roncalli Freshmen team.
The JV2 team finished pool play 1-1, beating Southport JV and losing to Chatard JV for a 3-way tie for first place. They earn a spot in the championship match with the point differential tie breaker. They fought hard, but also dropped a match to Roncalli’s freshman team. Ending the day with a 1-2 record and a second place finish in the tournament.
The JV1 and Varsity teams continued their season by traveling to Guerin Catholic school for the first ever boys volleyball matches at The Nest. The Golden Eagles filled the house to capacity for this historic match. JV1 dropped the first set, but bounced strong, winning the match 2-1.
Varsity took care of business winning their match 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-16). The offense was led by Mario Capo with 9 kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Aggressive serving also helped keep the pressure on Guerin’s defense. The Tigers posted 15 total aces to the Golden Eagles’ 4. They were led by sophomore Parker Beale with 5 aces, followed by Chase Christiansen and Matt Conaway with 3 aces each. The defense was again anchored by Lucas Hoffman with 4 digs and 8 serves received. Mario Capo followed with 4 digs and 6 serves received. Middle blocker Chase recorded 1 dig and 7 serves received.
Starting the season with a 4-1 record for Varsity is a great start. They look to continue to build upon the early success by hosting first-year program Herron High School. They also play two very tough Louisville-area teams (St. Xavier and Trinity) this Saturday at Carmel High School starting at 1pm.
