The Tigers advanced to next weekend’s IHSAA State Cross Country Championship with a 3rd place finish at the IHSAA Semi State held on Saturday at the Blue River CC Venue in Shelbyville. The cool weather and flat course made for a perfect day for racing. The Tigers took advantage of the ideal conditions as four out of the five scoring members of the team set PRs.
The start made a sharp funnel after about 400 yards and the Tigers were out quick to avoid any congestion as the course narrowed. Ashton Murray got out fast right behind Curtis Eckstein (Oldenburg Academy) and Gabe Fendel (Hamilton Southeastern). Josh Roth, always near the front, and Sam Kuhn followed closely.
At the 1000 meter mark, the much anticipated battle between Eckstein and Fendel was developing as both had put several seconds on the entire field. The chase pack included Roth, Kuhn, Ethan Meyer and Murray.
The hallway point of the race occurs after the runners have gone through several switchbacks. The runners had started to thin out and the chase pack had shrunk with Roth in 7th and Kuhn in 14th. Meyer was in 20th and in the middle of the second group with Brandon Reyes and Murray just off the pace.
In the last 1000 meters of the race, Eckstein was able to pull away from Fendel and cross the finish line in 14:34.4 to take the victory. Kuhn was part of the first group to come down the long straightaway to the finish, crossing the line at 15:32.8 for 7th place (PR). Roth finished in 10th place with a time of 15:39.1 (PR). Murray crossed the line in 27th place with a time of 15:53.5. Brandon Reyes finished in 38th with a time of 16:04.4 (PR). Andrew Runion was right behind Reyes, finishing with a time of 16:04.7, good enough for 40th place (PR).
The Carmel Greyhounds won the Semi State with 53 team points. The Hamilton Southeastern Royals were 2nd with a team score of 77 points. The Tigers took 3rd place with 95 points. Also advancing to next weekâs State Championship were the Brebeuf Jesuit Braves, Avon Orioles and Zionsville Eagles.
This will be the third year in a row the Tigers have competed as a team at the IHSAA State Cross Country Championship and the sixth time in 11 years. Both the girls and boys teams from Fishers will compete next Saturday, October 29th at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute (girls @ 1:00pm and boys @ 1:45pm).
