The Tigers finished in 2nd place at the HCC Cross Country Championship Meet held last Saturday at White River Elementary School in Noblesville. The rains from earlier in the week left the course very soft on an otherwise great day for racing.
Josh Roth, Sam Kuhn and Gabe Fendel (Hamilton Southeastern) led all runners off the start line and to the northern loop of the course. By the 1 mile marker, Roth was in a pack of 5 runners led by Fendel vying for the lead. Kuhn, Ethan Meyer, Andrew Runion, Brandon Reyes and Aaron Worley were in a large chase pack of approximately 18 runners as the runners transitioned to the woods loop of the course.
As the runners passed the halfway point, Roth was in a lead pack that included Fendel, Rhys Grealish (Avon) and Evan Tate Browning (Zionsville). Kuhn was in 8th place within a secondary pack that included several Hamilton Southeastern runners. Meyer was in 17th, Worley 19th and Runion in 21st. Fendel surged as he headed into the 2nd woods loop opening up a 2-3 second gap on the other three runners in the lead pack.
Fendel did not relinquish the lead and finished in 15:46.2. Kuhn was able to close in a 3:04.2 for his last kilometer to move up three spots and finish in 3rd (15:53.8), edging out Roth at the finish line who finished 4th in 15:54.4. Worley finished in 18th with a time of 16:23.7, followed by Meyer in 19th (16:29.6), and Runion in 20th (16:30.6).
The Hamilton Southeastern Royals finish in 1st place with 40 team points. The Tigers took 2nd with 64 points. Avon rounded out the top 3 teams, finishing with 76 points.
Next Saturday the IHSAA Tournament begins with the Noblesville Sectional Meet once again held at White River Elementary School. The boys varsity (top 7) will race at 10:45 am with the top 5 finishing teams advancing to the Regional round.
