The Terre Haute Savings Bank Invite (also known as State Preview) yesterday was the first varsity 5k race of the season and a chance for the Tigers to test themselves against some of the best teams in the state. On a sunny and cool morning, the Tigers were excited to race the very tough LaVern Gibson Cross Country course, the home of the IHSAA State Championship. Behind strong performance by Josh Roth and Sam Kuhn, the Tigers finished 2nd overall to the top ranked team in the state and defending state champs, the Carmel Greyhounds.
Roth ran with the lead pack throughout the race. At the 2k point, he was in 6th place while Kuhn wasnât far behind in 12th. Roth moved into 1st place as he neared the 4k mark and battled Cole Hocker (Cathedral) and Aaron Bennett (Westfield) to the finish. Roth, a senior, finished in 3rd place with a time of 16:06.1. Kuhn made his move during the back half of the race, moving from 12th near the halfway mark to 7th at the 4k before finishing in 4th place in a time of 16:09.7. Alex Meyer finished in 15th place with a PR of 16:27.7. Rounding out the scoring for the Tigers, was Ethan Meyer in 22nd place with a PR of 16:30.8 and Brandon Reyes who had his best run of the young season, finishing in 32nd place and a PR of 16:39.6. Seth Foutty finished in 16:48.0, also a PR, while Ashton Murray finished in 17:04.0.
Carmel secured the victory with 54 team points while the Tigers finished with 80 points. Rounding out the top 5 teams was the Westfield Shamrocks (157 points), Valparaiso Vikings (175 points) and Terre Haute South Braves (190 points).
The Tigers next race is in Peoria, Illinois at the 29th Annual First to the Finish Cross Country Invitation on Saturday, September 10th. The Tigers will hope to improve upon their 5th place finish from a year ago.
